I love this Michelle, and it speaks to me on many levels. I am conscious of the time spent on social media, and know that a large part of it is for my work or as an escape valve. For me it’s also a way of connecting with some people as it’s the only place we do. So it depends on how it is used ultimately. But more than anything, I want to be in control, not the algorithm sucking me in mindlessly!
Yes that's the dichotomy - not WANTING to use it but NEEDING to use it for work and then getting sucked in. But you've hit the nail right on the head - we need to be in control and that's what I think these sites take away from us.
thank you so much for the shout-out, Michelle! I love your take on this. something that keeps coming back to me is how reading can't really be considered a hobby because we have to learn how to read, whereas watching a film (or tiktok or reels) is 'easy' because seeing is, for most of us, natural. so, in actuality, reading is a very active thing to do because, as you said, you need to engage with it on a deeper level. you have to use your knowledge to interpret, decode and picture the story. which makes it all the more amazing to me!

You're so welcome - I think there's a lot of us feeling this way. And I agree with you about reading - I just need to decide on a new shape 😄
